Mr. Ryan Yuen, Regional Director of International Water Association, introduced the World Water Monitoring Day (WMMD) Program, an international education and outreach program that has been in place for nine (9) years. Its goal is to educate and engage citizens in the protection of the world’s water resources. It is anchored at making the people understand and ask the right questions – such as “how does the use of land around the river and the weather affect the quality of water?” It encourages people to reflect on personal level what and how they can help improve the quality of water.
Although WWMD is officially celebrated on September 18, the program introduced an extended monitoring period from March 22 until December 31 in order to accommodate groups that wish to monitor at other times during the year. Monitoring is being done by measuring the water quality through a test kit.
